Favourite fictional settings

March 28, 2017

Reality is highly overrated.  With science fiction and fantasy comes great escapism, so in today's episode we discuss fictional worlds and settings that we love.

Ancient film reviews: Interstellar

March 21, 2017

Continuing our voyage into the dim dark past, today we look at Christopher Nolan's 2014 film Interstellar.  A huge success both at the box office and with critics, George R. R. Martin called Interstellar "the most ambitious and challenging science fiction film since Kubrick's 2001.  Do we dare disagree with the George?  Quite possibly.  Yes, hell might be freezing over...

Novel cover versions - reboots by other authors

March 14, 2017

Reboots are pretty common in films and TV, even comics do them, but this is not something seen in the world of prose novels.  In this podcast we discuss novels we think would be interesting to be rebooted by a different author.  Of course, we don't expect any of this to actually happen but it's a fun exercise in looking at the potential within books for alternative takes.

Film review: The Great Wall

March 7, 2017

Like all sensible people, we can't get enough Matt Damon in our movies. Today's podcast looks at the recent Chinese film, The Great Wall, where Matt Damon helps China keep some nasty monsters out of their damn yard and behind that Great Wall.  Does Matt Damon need rescuing?  Oh he better.

Film review: The Lobster

February 28, 2017

One of the odder films of recent times, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Lobster is dystopian and slightly surreal story of a society where single people have a limited time to find a partner or be transformed into an animal of their choice.  It received an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay and won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.  Was it too weird for the Weirdsphere?  There's just no way of knowing...

Comic review: The Vision

February 21, 2017

This week we turn our attentions to a comic series released by Marvel about one of our least favourite characters, the Vision.  A 12 issue limited series by writer Tom King and artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta, one of our podcasters drew a comparison between it and the Watchmen.  Whaaaat?  Is that justified?  Did the rest of these clowns like it that much too?

Favourite spaceships

February 7, 2017

One of our crew likes spaceships.  A lot.  To pacify her, we have spent this entire episode discussing our favourite spaceships from fiction, and perhaps one or two from reality.  Reality?  What's that?

Favourite movie heroes

January 10, 2017

So last week we discussed our favourite movie villains.  This week, we embrace the light side and try our hardest to find some of those wretched do gooders who make us not too queasy.

Favourite Movie Villains

January 3, 2017

Being bad is fun!  Well, not in reality, but in a fictional world, who doesn't love a truly nasty villain?  In today's podcast we discuss our favourite movie villains.  And y'know, we mean characters from the films so prequels era George Lucas is not a valid choice...

Board game review: Room 25

December 27, 2016

Is your idea of fun waking up in a strange square room with a door on each wall leading to other square rooms potentially filled death traps like acid baths and rotating blades? And possibly one of your group is a nasty old hidden traitor who may give you a helpful shove into the instant death incinerator room?  Yes?  Wow, we have so much in common.  We should meet up in Room 25, which is also the name of today's board game we've reviewed.

Board game review : Mechs vs Minions

December 20, 2016

Film review: Star Wars - the original trilogy (despecialized editions)

December 13, 2016

Today's episode is a jump back in time in a number of ways.  First, it was recorded before we started The Weirdsphere just before Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released.  Secondly, it's a review of the original Star Wars trilogy.  And finally, we watched the "despecialized editions" which are as close to the versions of the films shown in the cinemas as is possible in this world of Lucas-enforced CGI additions.  So, is the original trilogy just a fun nostalgia piece or is it truly as great as its position in movie history would suggest?

TV review: Black Mirror S3 E1 - Playtest

December 6, 2016

Charlie Brooker's feel good series Black Mirror offers up another dose of saccharine joy with the second episode of season 3, Playtest.  This time looking at virtual and augmented reality technology.  I mean, that couldn't possibly go in a depressing direction could it?

TV review: The Expanse Season 1

November 29, 2016

A new show, with spaceships.  Yea, basically Barbara would have murdered us all in our sleep if we didn't cover this.  The Expanse is a new series from the SyFy channel (and moving to Netflix) based on a series of novels by James S. A. Corey.  Is it any good?  Does the TV show do justice to the books?  Are the spaceships up to Barbara's high standards?

Oh, and a slight warning, we do give away some minor spoilers before we hit the official spoiler section.  Apologies if this catches anyone out.  The parties responsible will be duly punished by podcast enforcers Monster and Mr Snuggles.

Movie sequels we want

November 15, 2016

It sometimes seems that sequels are never good and are just the studios milking the fans for money, but we in the Weirdsphere are not that cynical (ok, we are but let's play pretend).  In today's episode we look at films we think deserve a good sequel and propose what direction we would like to see it take.
