Film review: Star Wars - the original trilogy (despecialized editions)

December 13, 2016

Today's episode is a jump back in time in a number of ways.  First, it was recorded before we started The Weirdsphere just before Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released.  Secondly, it's a review of the original Star Wars trilogy.  And finally, we watched the "despecialized editions" which are as close to the versions of the films shown in the cinemas as is possible in this world of Lucas-enforced CGI additions.  So, is the original trilogy just a fun nostalgia piece or is it truly as great as its position in movie history would suggest?

TV review: Black Mirror S3 E1 - Playtest

December 6, 2016

Charlie Brooker's feel good series Black Mirror offers up another dose of saccharine joy with the second episode of season 3, Playtest.  This time looking at virtual and augmented reality technology.  I mean, that couldn't possibly go in a depressing direction could it?

TV review: The Expanse Season 1

November 29, 2016

A new show, with spaceships.  Yea, basically Barbara would have murdered us all in our sleep if we didn't cover this.  The Expanse is a new series from the SyFy channel (and moving to Netflix) based on a series of novels by James S. A. Corey.  Is it any good?  Does the TV show do justice to the books?  Are the spaceships up to Barbara's high standards?

Oh, and a slight warning, we do give away some minor spoilers before we hit the official spoiler section.  Apologies if this catches anyone out.  The parties responsible will be duly punished by podcast enforcers Monster and Mr Snuggles.

November 22, 2016

In today's podcast we discuss the new science fiction film Arrival.  Take some Independence Day, add some Contact and drain away any excess colour or vibrancy.

Movie sequels we want

November 15, 2016

It sometimes seems that sequels are never good and are just the studios milking the fans for money, but we in the Weirdsphere are not that cynical (ok, we are but let's play pretend).  In today's episode we look at films we think deserve a good sequel and propose what direction we would like to see it take.

Film review: Doctor Strange

November 1, 2016

Doctor Strange, Doctor Strange. Does whatever a doctor can.  Spins a spell... ooooookay, maybe we'll stop there.  So is Marvel's venture into the world of magic as fun and catchy as that Spider-Man theme?  We deliver our thoughts first in a non-spoilery way, but then open up the floodgates and get into the meat of it.

Film review: It Follows

October 28, 2016

Just in time for Halloween we watch one of the more interesting recent horror films, It Follows.  How scary is it?  Is it worth watching? How does Barbara cope with a horror movie without even a spaceship to focus on?

Favourite Horror Books

October 25, 2016

With Halloween rapidly approaching we have formed a circle and gotten out the oujia board to summon our favourite horror novels.  Sadly horror-fiend Andy couldn't be here to share with us his deep abiding love for Clive Barker's Scarlet Gospels.

Rogue One new trailer thoughts

October 23, 2016

A new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has shown up.  Is this looking like a good expansion of the Star Wars universe or a shameless cash grab?  Or both.

October 20, 2016

Season 7 of The Walking Dead is about to lurch onto our screens and one of our cast of heroes (umm, well, protagonists anyway) look to be biting the dust thanks to everyone's new favourite couple, Negan and Lucille.  In this episode we discuss season 6 of the show and theorise on who we think receives Lucille's tender kiss.

TV review: Netflix’s Luke Cage

October 18, 2016

Sweet Christmas!  Are these Marvel Netflix series ever going to stop?  Well, let's hope not.  The latest, Luke Cage, is here and we've watched it and now get out the utensils for a detailed critique and analysis of its plot, theme and characters.  Hah!  As if, nah, we just rant and talk the usual garbage.

HBO’s Westworld - non-spoiler discussion

October 15, 2016

HBO is here again with a new series, a reboot/re-imagining of the 1973 film Westworld.  A couple of us watched the first two episodes and felt compelled to discuss it (without spoilers).  Was this because it was really bad or due to it being great?  Who knows?  (Hint: it's bloody awesome)

Book discussion: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - Becky Chambers

October 4, 2016

Wormholes in space don't just create themselves you know.  No, that's the job for a spaceship (calm now Barbara) with a small mixed species crew.  Becky Chambers' The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet follows this crew on their latest mission and explores quite a variety of themes in this interesting but fun book.  Join us as our own plucky crew dive into the book and dig into this world, characters and some of the topics raised by this novel.

The current state of Marvel and DC comics

September 27, 2016

So both Marvel and DC have recently gotten out the broom and gone hard to work tidying and reorganising their comics universes.  Reboots and undoing reboots (un-reboots?) have been the state of play so the question is, are the results good for readers?  After a (not so short) review of DC's various reboots and Marvel's recent Secret Wars storyline, we discuss the current landscape of mainstream superhero comics and if this is a friendly place for attracting new readers.

Post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction

September 20, 2016

Tired of living in an (arguably) functioning society?  Does a barren nuclear irradiated wasteland sound like a great holiday destination to you?  Is your glass half empty?  Well, sounds like you might enjoy post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction.  In this episode of the Weirdsphere we discuss this genre, it's popularity and whether it will continue to thrive in the future (which would kind of be inappropriate right?)

Groundhog Day - A new musical

September 17, 2016

Groundhog Day is one of the greatest comedies ever to grace the big screen.  Would this translate into a good musical?  Hmm, it's possible I guess.  What if the musical was written by the writer of the original film's screenplay Danny Rubin?  And how about if the music was from Tim Minchin??  Odds are this could actually be something cool.  Is it?  Only one way to find out!  Or you could listen to this episode of the Weirdsphere...

Alan Moore’s retirement from comics

September 15, 2016

So arguably the greatest writer comics has seen, Alan Moore, has announced his retirement from the media.  Is this sad news or is it really a good thing?  A bunch of fans of Mr Moore's works discuss this, and also argue about some of his past statements on what he aimed to achieve by writing the Watchmen...
