Film review: Spider-Man: Homecoming

July 27, 2017

Finally another Spider-Man film!  After the dizzying heights of the Andrew Garfield movies, can added Marvel make Spidey watchable again?  His Civil War cameo suggests yes.  Let's see...

Board game review: Star Wars: Rebellion

July 18, 2017

Ever watch the original Star Wars trilogy and think "You rebel scum have no idea what you're doing!  I could do so much better".  Or perhaps you're shouting at the Emperor to shut up and stop goading Luke as you know that's not going to work.  Well, in the board game Star Wars: Rebellion you are in control instead of these idiots so maybe you can do a better job!

Board game review: Raptor

July 4, 2017

Jurassic Park really did a disservice to velociraptors.  They're not nasty or evil, they're just like any of us.  Tell me, if a bunch of scientists turned up and tried to steal your kids for "research" you'd tear them into small chunks of bloody meat wouldn't you?  This is where the board game Raptor comes in.  It's a 2 player assymetrical game of scientists versus raptors.  Do you like stealing children or mutilating uppity nerds?  Choose your side!

Twin Peaks : The Return episodes 1 - 4

June 6, 2017

See you in 25 years...

And 25 years later (ok maybe it's 26) Twin Peaks has returned!  We've done the epic rewatch of the original series and film to prepare and have now seen the first 4 pure Lynch directed episodes.  Is it possible for the series to come back weirder than ever?  Why yes.  Yes it is!  Can we make sense of it?  Of course!!!  Well... maybe parts of it.  Join us as we stumble our way through the Black Lodge.

A look back at Twin Peaks

May 21, 2017

For no real reason we decided to rewatch all of David Lynch's television phenomena Twin Peaks and the follow up film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.  Does it still hold up 25 years later?  Is the coffee still damn good?  What the hell is happening with David Bowie?  All answers are within this podcast.  (Yea right)

Comics discussion: Heroes versus heroes

May 10, 2017

In the world of the big 2 comics publishers villains have become quite passé.  Why bother with a bad guy when you can just have your heroes beat each other senseless.  It's long been a tradition for our caped wonders to have their little tiffs but has it gone too far in recent times?  Let's discuss.

Ancient film reviews: Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

April 18, 2017

Superman.  The original superhero.  The sun powered savior with a smile.  Batman.  The cranky rich guy who puts on a leather pervert suit and beats up the poor and mentally ill.  Surely a film about these two meeting and comparing crime fighting strategies can't go wrong right?  RIGHT?  Zack Snyder's Batman vs Superman: Yawn of Justice may have other ideas.

Ancient film reviews: Phase IV

April 7, 2017

The next ancient film in our crosshairs is the British-American 1974 science fiction film, Phase IV.  By the 70s we'd outgrown the tired 50s scifi concepts of giant ants and instead embraced the far more terrifying threat of normal tiny sized ants.  Mmmm, move over Alien, science fiction horror has a new standard bearer...

Favourite fictional settings

March 28, 2017

Reality is highly overrated.  With science fiction and fantasy comes great escapism, so in today's episode we discuss fictional worlds and settings that we love.

Ancient film reviews: Interstellar

March 21, 2017

Continuing our voyage into the dim dark past, today we look at Christopher Nolan's 2014 film Interstellar.  A huge success both at the box office and with critics, George R. R. Martin called Interstellar "the most ambitious and challenging science fiction film since Kubrick's 2001.  Do we dare disagree with the George?  Quite possibly.  Yes, hell might be freezing over...

Novel cover versions - reboots by other authors

March 14, 2017

Reboots are pretty common in films and TV, even comics do them, but this is not something seen in the world of prose novels.  In this podcast we discuss novels we think would be interesting to be rebooted by a different author.  Of course, we don't expect any of this to actually happen but it's a fun exercise in looking at the potential within books for alternative takes.

Film review: The Great Wall

March 7, 2017

Like all sensible people, we can't get enough Matt Damon in our movies. Today's podcast looks at the recent Chinese film, The Great Wall, where Matt Damon helps China keep some nasty monsters out of their damn yard and behind that Great Wall.  Does Matt Damon need rescuing?  Oh he better.

Film review: The Lobster

February 28, 2017

One of the odder films of recent times, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Lobster is dystopian and slightly surreal story of a society where single people have a limited time to find a partner or be transformed into an animal of their choice.  It received an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay and won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.  Was it too weird for the Weirdsphere?  There's just no way of knowing...

Comic review: The Vision

February 21, 2017

This week we turn our attentions to a comic series released by Marvel about one of our least favourite characters, the Vision.  A 12 issue limited series by writer Tom King and artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta, one of our podcasters drew a comparison between it and the Watchmen.  Whaaaat?  Is that justified?  Did the rest of these clowns like it that much too?
